I remember the first time I ran into kangaroos, a few miles back from a National Park in the “Great Ocean Road”. I got out of the car to see them in the distance. Two were fighting, as they do in nature documentaries; this is to say, it’s something they really do, not that they do it as part of a film, receiving a salary in exchange from the documentary producer.

However, my enthusiasm for kangaroos was not shared by Australians, as a rule. A coworker, when I told him, politely told me, “I’m not so excited by them.” I guess that, in his eyes, I was behaving like a small kid who has just seen his first cow.

What excites me about this image is that, if this were Australia, this kind of scene could really happen: we would have kangaroos running through our ancient cities, because as we know from the news, kangaroos sometimes appear in the middle of urban centers. And here, because of the greater appeal of cities, kangaroos would probably be encouraged to visit them more and maybe even in herds.

Significance of the artwork:

This artwork reminds us how a combination of culture and nature in our lives contributes to enrich our existence. And secondly, it shows – in a symbolic way – how nature could be more present in our daily lives if we preserved our environment better.
