The artist’s inspiration

Description:

The point of view of this fabulous sculpture by Velazquez, created by Aniceto Marinas in 1899 and located next to the Prado Museum, allows us to appreciate two fundamental traits of the genius painter: his artistic facet as well as his knightly and courageous one, represented by his sword. These two attributes, his adventurous spirit and sensitivity, help shape this work, in which Velázquez is shown surrounded by 4 rainbow lorikeets from the subtropical forests of Australia, with an outfit that emulates their colors.

This piece represents a reciprocal relationship: on the one hand, these birds seem to be the whimsical occurrence of a brilliant painter (observe the tip of the brush, which shows the colors that make up the parrots); and on the other hand, the painter’s clothing appears tinged with the same tones of the birds, as if it was the beauty of nature which causes for the first time the sensitivity love art or to become an artist.

Significance of the artwork:

This work is about the importance of cultivating art, caring for nature, and having courage.
